Lesson 16

The genie and Abdul
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! Abdul, an unassuming goldsmith, sprinted away from the palace guards, who were angrily chasing him through the gates and shooting poison arrows. He was scared, breathless, and tired of running. Just five minutes ago, he was in the tremendous and magnificent palace, begging the sultan to pay him for the golden bowl he had made, because he needed feed his wife and starving children. The unfair and capricious sultan, who wanted to cheat Abdul out of the money he owed him, thought that if he pretended to get angry when Abdul argued about the price, he could call the guards. Abdul would get scared, drop the bowl, and run out of the palace. This is exactly what happened, and now Abdul found himself bolting from the unjust sultan’s royal residence.
Suddenly, Abdul came across a mysterious cave, which he had never heard of. Because the guards were pursuing him, he felt he had no choice but to slip into the strange and possibly dangerous cave. But as soon as he stepped inside, he slipped down a tunnel. Rocks tumbled after him. A huge boulder hit Abdul in the head, and with one last tumble, he hit the dusty bottom of the cave and fainted. Hours later, he awoke to find that the entrance to the cave was blocked by rocks. He felt as though his life was coming to an end. Then, out of the gloomy darkness, he distinguished, in the distance, the small flickering light of a lamp illuminating the strange underground chamber.
Curiously, he walked over to the lamp and slowly picked it up. At that moment, steam started coming out of it, and through the steam, a female genie, who was as callous as a leopard hunting an ibex, appeared. She told Abdul that for helping her get out of the lamp, he would get three wishes, but for one of the wishes, he had to release her from the cave or she would turn him into ashes. For his first wish, he wished for food for his family, because his family was so hungry. For his second, he wished to go home. His final wish was to free the genie. His curiosity about the lamp had saved his life and given him so much more. Thanks to the genie, humble Abdul never found himself running away from the palace again.
